No, it’s not because they keep talking about their rocking sex life or because I’m going to join them in sharing way, way too much information – it’s because we’re both supporting charity:water on Blog Action Day (BAD).

Yeah, I know: this means I’m officially part of the big, oozing blogosphere, but BAD is good – an annual event that unites bloggers around the world on October 15 to post about one big issue, spark discussion, and hopefully get people all fired up to do something about it. And this year, the topic is water.

Water is an immense global issue. One billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean drinking water, and that leads directly to disease and death. In fact, unsafe drinking water kills more people than all other diseases combined– more than even war. So the work charity:water does is pretty darn incredible.

In four years, charity:water has raised more than $20 million and funded 2,906 water projects in hospitals, schools and communities in countries like Bangladesh, Congo, Central African Republic, Cambodia, Haiti, Nepal, Honduras, and Malawi. These wells don’t just mean safe drinking water; they free girls and women from having to walk miles every day to carry water back to their families, so they can work, go to school and farm.

Best of all, 100% of any money you donate to charity:water goes directly to building wells. And $20 will provide one person with clean, fresh, safe water for 20 years.

charity: water is a phenomenal movement, with celebrity endorsements from the likes of Alyssa Milano, the Smiths, and Jennifer Connelly – which makes me a little nervous (plus the founder Scott Harrison looks a lot like Dr. McSteamy) – but the work they’ve done in activating people to volunteer, fundraise, turn birthday gifts into donations, and brilliantly use social networking for good is nothing short of amazing.
